Having introduced a long-awaited update to the Apple TV during their live event last month, Apple is now taking order for the new streaming box.

The online Apple Store is showing the 32GB version is available for £129, with the 64GB going for £169. Right now, the site is saying the device should be dispatched within 5 days.

While the hardware itself still looks the same, this new Apple TV is more powerful, and also houses a revamped App Store that includes a lot more from third-party apps and developers.

In short, it’s a lot closer to the sort of the experience you get from the likes of the Amazon Fire TV, with Apple aiming to use their considerable App Store muscle to create an experience similar to what it offers on iPhone and iPad already.

As well as new content, the way you navigate it has also changed thanks to new remote. The button layout has changed and been added to; most crucially with the addition of voice controls for search capabilities. Apple also says it’s a smart search; so vague commands such as ‘show me action movies’ produce good results.

The firm’s chief Tim Cook was big in his praise for the Apple TV when the new device was announced, as well as bold in his predictions for television as a whole.

“It’s the golden age of television,” he said.

“Our vision for TV is simple and perhaps a little provocative. We believe the future of television is apps.”

They will face some stiff competition however from the already mentioned Fire TV, but also the revamped Chromecast that Google also announced last month.
