Microsoft’s new console – the slimline Xbox One S – has gone on sale in the UK.
The new console, which was first announced at the E3 gaming show in June, is 40% more compact than the current Xbox One and is the first console to support 4K video streaming – double the resolution of HD.
The console also comes high dynamic range (HDR) ready, meaning it has a higher contrast range between light and dark, making for better images.
Xbox claims this will improve the appearance of its games.
In a blog post on the new console, the technology firm said: “With the biggest blockbuster line-up of games in Xbox history coming to Xbox One and Windows 10 this year, platform updates to help you stay connected with friends on Xbox Live with even more games across your favourite devices and more hardware options available, 2016 and beyond is looking to be an incredible time to be an Xbox gamer.”
The launch coincides with Microsoft also releasing a major update to its Windows 10 software which runs on PC but is also now being extended to the Xbox platform.
Gamers will be able to access the Windows virtual assistant, Cortana, as part of the update.
The Xbox One has been outsold by rival Sony and their PlayStation 4 console since they both were released in 2013.
Sony is also planning to release a 4K-enabled console – PlayStation Neo – next year while Xbox is also due to launch what they call “the most powerful console ever” – Project Scorpio – at the end of 2017.
