OpenOffice is facing the prospect of “retirement” if it doesn’t find more volunteer developers, according to its vice president.
The issue with the popular free alternative to Microsoft Office was revealed in a message to the project mailing list by vice president Dennis Hamilton.
He told recipients that the lack of developer manpower meant that the team was unable to issue updates to fix security issues.
Instead the team had to issue updates on security threats and vulnerabilities with its software, but was unable to fix it.
Another free software, LibreOffice, looks to be scooping up OpenOffice’s defectors. In fact, when a security breach occurred in July, the team actively told users to switch to Microsoft Office or LibreOffice until the issue could be rectified.
