Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro, the video games console the tech giant calls “the most powerful in the world”, has gone on sale in the UK.

The PS4 Pro, which was unveiled in October and costs £350, contains faster, improved computer processors as well as the ability to display video games in 4K resolution for the first time – up to four times the resolution of HD.

The new console also supports high dynamic range (HDR) image technology which improves the colours seen on screen.

A host of high-end games, including the new Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Battlefield 1 and Fifa 17 will be available from launch using the new imaging technology – which will be available as a software download to Pro buyers, Sony said.

Jim Ryan, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe, said the technology giant wanted to make video games more immersive.

“Since unveiling PS4 Pro, we know players have been very eager to see exactly how it will impact their favourite games,” he said.

“We are pleased to say that the console will give them the experience they have been waiting for; images are incredibly sharp and the tiniest details are magnified – making gameplay more immersive than ever before.”

The launch of the PS4 Pro comes a month after Sony also moved into virtual reality for the first time, having released the PlayStation VR headset in October. That system is also compatible with PS4 Pro.

“Being able to significantly boost the visual impact of our games by using PS4 Pro’s 4K and HDR technologies makes our software offering stronger than ever,” Mr Ryan added.

Sony said 45 games will be compatible with the Pro’s enhancements by the end of the year, and all future releases will be compatible on the Pro and the existing, standard PS4.

Rival console system Xbox, which is made by Microsoft, is also due to release a more powerful console of its own, at the end of 2017, currently known only as Project Scorpio.

Microsoft has said the console will support 4K gaming and has also given it the label of “most powerful console ever”.
