Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will begin on Friday

The new Galaxy S6 and S6 edge will be available to pre-order in the UK from Friday, Samsung has confirmed.

The new flagship devices were first unveiled to the world at the beginning of March at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and appear to be quite a swipe at Samsung’s perennial rival, Apple.

There’s an all-metal body for the first time – something Apple’s been doing for a while – as well as Samsung Pay, a digital wallet and contactless payment system built right into the phone. Yes, Apple already do that too.

But this one is a little more complicated as some Samsung devices have been using the technology for more than two years, but it seems Apple Pay has “legitimised” the idea. It’s this kind of reaction that makes Apple fans not very popular with Android users….

Elsewhere there will be three colours of Galaxy to choose from: White Pearl, Black Sapphire and Gold Platinum.

And, of course, there is the edge and its “dual-curved display”, which in non-tech speak is a screen that curves onto the sides of the device. This extra screen real estate is going to be utilised too, with shortcuts for favourite contacts as well as news tickers set to be used by some apps.

Wireless charging is also a big selling point for the new phones – with the ability to boost battery without having to tether your device via a wire. You did still have that option however, and doing so has appeal as well – 10 minutes will give you up to four hours of battery life.

So there are plenty of reasons to consider upgrading to the S6, though crucially we have no price information just yet. Nothing official anyway, but many are suggesting it could be more expensive than the iPhone 6.

If you find yourself a bit low on tech budget this month as well, that shouldn’t be too surprising – the HTC One M9 goes on sale this month, and the Pebble Time Kickstarter has been going on too. Don’t forget Apple Watch pre-orders start in April too. So does the Microsoft Band.

I wonder if we can get through the month without food?
