The price of Netflix is changing for some users, will you be affected?

Netflix, everyone’s favourite rainy-day companion, has confirmed that a price increase is on the way for some users in line with a move the streaming giant made in the US recently.

Currently, Netflix has three tiers of pricing – Basic, Standard and Premium. Basic is £5.99 a month and allows users to watch on only one screen at a time and only provides standard definition picture quality. Standard ups this to HD and gives access to two screens for £7.49, while if you choose to go Premium you get 4K video and four screens for £8.99.

However, very early adopters of Netflix in the UK will have gotten what is now the Standard package, but for the price of the Basic – £5.99. This is now set to be changed in the UK after a similar switch in the US, so those on the £5.99 version of Standard will see a £1.50 a month rise to £7.49, the same as a new subscriber to the service today would pay.

Netflix prices globally have been frozen for the last two years in a process it calls ‘grandfathering’ and is regarded as a “gift to members.”

However, these price changes will begin to occur from May, with Netflix confirming it will notify users by email and within the service ahead of the change to give them time to plan. Dates will also vary depending on your billing period.

If users go to the My Account area of Netflix and look at the Plan Details section, a note should say when your plan price is guaranteed until, giving an idea of when to expect any change to kick in.

It’s also worth noting that users on the £3.99 Basic and £8.99 Premium will be unaffected by the switch.
