Though the PlayStation 2 has long since been superseded by both the PS3 and PS4, it’s only in the past day that the console has finally shut down.
Until Thursday, there were still servers active for Final Fantasy XI’s online functionality, but those have now been phased out – bringing down the curtain on one of the biggest-selling games consoles ever.

Now that start screen is no more.
The PS2 was a global success for Sony, shifting more than 100 million units – significantly more than its rival, the original Xbox. Many argue it was the success of this generation of device that was the springboard for Sony to establish itself as one of the key players in the gaming world.
The Sony console will of course still work if you want to play offline to get your nostalgia fix, but those looking for some retro online gameplay will now have to turn to its successor the PS3.
