Q&A: What is EE's replacement for Orange Wednesdays?

It used to be a staple for a hump day – two cinema tickets and a night out to break up the week, but Orange Wednesdays is now gone.

But fear not because EE has just confirmed its replacement – EE Film Club – still movie-based so celluloid lovers can breathe a sigh of relief.

What is EE Film Club?

The new service is now all about streaming. EE, Orange and T-Mobile customers can now get a weekly movie rental for £1, every week via streaming service Wuaki.tv, which is EE’s partners on the service. It’s a pay-as-you-go Netflix essentially.

How does it work?

The redemption system is still very familiar. EE customers text ‘film’ to 141 and receive a code in response. This can then be redeemed at Wuaki.tv in exchange for a rental. The good news is that rentals can be streamed on mobile devices via an app – so smartphones and tablets, as well as via desktop computers and laptops. There’s also a Wuaki.tv app that can be used and this works on smart TVs too.

Plus, if you have a mirroring device like a Chromecast or as EE are keen to plug – EE TV – you can send it from your device to the TV at home.

What’s the catch?

Texts cost 35p a pop, which is actually the same as Orange Wednesdays. Codes have to be requested between Monday and Wednesday, and rentals are available after redemption for 48 hours. So plan accordingly and make sure you don’t forget to watch.

When does the service go live?

It starts on March 30. That was an easy one.

What’s the movie library like?

This is the big question. The EE Film Club section of the Wuaki.tv website shows a line-up of movies similar to Netflix – i.e. not very inspiring. But, EE has said that the majority of new releases and all other film rentals will be available from launch. Considering Interstellar is already on there having only appeared on the Sky Store this week, this sounds a lot more promising.

But what if I still want the genuine cinema experience?

Though Orange Wednesdays ended in February, an identical offer is still in fact available. Vue cinemas are running their own ’2for1 Wednesdays’ offer throughout March. It’s still exclusive to EE customers and works by giving users a membership number to quote at the box office. There is even talk of the chain extending it beyond this month.
