Qantas has taken delivery of its first Boeing Dreamliner, the aircraft that will fly direct between Australia and Europe for the first time.

Once in service, the new 787-9 will be the first to fly direct between Perth and London, carrying 236 passengers.

The new aircraft also features improved cabin air pressure features, including new conditions settings equivalent to that of an altitude of 6,000 feet – closer to normal conditions than the current industry standard of 8,000 feet.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said: “We’ve taken delivery of hundreds of aircraft in our 98-year history but only a few of them have been game-changers like this one.”

He added: “This aircraft means we can finally offer a direct link between Australia and Europe, with our Perth to London flight that starts next year. We’re looking at several other exciting route options as well.”

The new aircraft also feature 65% larger windows and are up to 20% more fuel efficient, according to Qantas.

The first Qantas Dreamliner will make its maiden flight on December 15 this year, flying from Melbourne to Los Angeles.
