Some nine months after it was first announced, Windows 10 will finally become available in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Here is a handy guide on how to sign up for the upgrade.

1. Get Windows 10

If you are running either Windows 7 or 8, then you are eligible to upgrade to Windows 10 for free any time in the next year. To sign up for it, you need to click on the Windows logo icon that appears in the bottom right of your taskbar – close to where the time and date is displayed. This is the Get Windows 10 app. A pop-up window will appear once clicked, and an option to “reserve your free upgrade” will present itself.

2. Check My PC

To ensure your device meets the specifications required for Windows 10, the app also contains a Check My PC feature, which you can use to ensure you have the storage space and processor power for the update.

3. Your Reservation

Once you have entered your email address to confirm the reservation, you are all set. But if you change your mind, you can also cancel at any time.

4. Notifications

As Microsoft is rolling out Windows 10 in stages, do not be alarmed if your notification does not come through straight away on launch day. Windows will send you a notification to tell you when 10 is ready to be downloaded to your device.

5. Paying for Windows 10

Those without Windows 7 or 8 will have to pay in order to upgrade when Windows 10 goes on sale at the end of the month, with the Home version costing £99.
