Apple has taken us into a timewarp and announced a new iPod touch, as well as a complete new line-up of colours for all models.

Interestingly, the forgotten sibling of the iPhone and iPad has been given some impressive specs, with the new iPod touch now coming with an 8 megapixel iSight camera and the A8 processor chip. For perspective, both of those pieces of tech are also in the iPhone 6.

The new colours Apple has added to the iPod landscape are space grey, silver and gold – staple iOS device colours these days – as well as pink and blue.

Though a surprising move initially to update a product whose sales are in steady decline, with the launch of Apple Music at the end of June there is perhaps no better time to attempt to revitalise the company’s dedicated music device.

The vice president of iPod product marketing, Greg Joswiak, said: “iPod touch gives customers around the world access to Apple Music, the App Store and iOS, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, starting at just £159.

“With big advancements like the A8 chip and the 8 megapixel iSight camera, customers can experience next-level gameplay, take even more beautiful photos and enjoy their favourite music, TV shows and movies.”

That £159 is for the 16GB model, with a 32GB version costing £199, while the 64GB will set you back £249.

It’s not the traditional Apple launch where you have to wait a month to get hold of the product either – the new iPods are in the Apple Store right now.
