Until now, humanoid robots that can walk have struggled on any terrain which isn’t flat.
One look at the montage of robots falling over from this year’s DARPA Robotics Challenge proves that.
But this could all be about to change thanks to Boston Dynamics, and their Atlas robot, which the firm has just shown moving through the trees of a dense forest. Yes, the robots can now chase us through the woods.
The man on stage speaking is Marc Raibert, the founder of Boston Dynamics, and his phrase that the robot now has “mobility in the shooting range” of a human’s doesn’t make us feel much better either.
The only reassurance for now is that the Atlas requires a power tether in order to keep moving – so that might slow it down a bit.
