Robot furniture could be the future of space saving

The future of furniture and space-saving is shape-shifting, foldable units according to one technology firm, which has created a living room, bedroom, wardrobe and office from one flexible unit.

Ori Systems has created what they call their “full system”, a single, robotic unit that can be moved around a space, offering different room settings and usage options as it does.

Introducing Ori – www.orisystems.com

Controlled by a single button, the system can shift around a room, hiding and revealing a bed or office space, as well as wardrobe or shelf-space.

Ori says the system has been inspired by origami – that is where the name comes from – and uses technology that comes out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and its Media Lab’s CityHome project, which looks at new ways of responding to the challenge of globalisation and the increasingly shrinking space in cities around the world.

The system is also linked to an app, enabling owners to reconfigure it remotely – so you could in theory get the room ready for bed before you even get home.

There is no official confirmation of pricing yet, and the first roll out of the units will begin in building developments in the US in coming months.
