The Rugby World Cup was the UK’s biggest trending sports event of 2015, according to new data from Twitter.
Hosted in England this year, the tournament’s #RWC2015 came top of a list of the best performing sports hashtags of the year.
It was a competition full of upsets and historic moments, which ultimately saw the hot favourites New Zealand come out on top.
We think England might have been in the tournament too, but we can’t really remember.
Lewis Hamilton’s victory in the Formula 1 championship evidently caught the nation’s attention as well, as #F1 was the second most popular trend.
One of the year’s biggest sporting events for the UK was notable by its absence from the top 10 – England’s triumph in The Ashes.
The closest thing to recognising the achievement of the English cricket team was the eighth ranked #ENG, which, admittedly, could refer to basically any sport.
The remainder of the list was dominated by football, including the FA Cup (#FACup), the Premier League (#BPL), the Champions League (#UCL) and transfer deadline day (#DeadlineDay).
Creeping into the list at number 10 was #FIFA, after this year saw controversy engulf the sport with serious allegations of corruption hitting football’s governing body.
Sepp Blatter announced he would not stand again in the next Fifa presidential election as a result of the scandal.
Perhaps the surprise entry of this year was #WWE, an inclusion that perhaps suggests the UK prefers a good bit of wrestling over cricketing glory.
The full list was as follows:
1. #RWC2015
2. #F1
3. #FACup
4. #BPL
5. #UCL
6. #Wimbledon
7. #WWE
8. #DeadlineDay
9. #ENG
10. #FIFA
