Samsung has reportedly been given the go-ahead to test self-driving cars by the South Korean government.
It is the first electronics group in South Korea to gain such approval, according to the Financial Times.
The latest development allows it to keep up with Uber, Alphabet and Apple, which is already testing autonomous vehicles.
Samsung, known primarily for its smartphones, has said it is not trying to create an entire car.
Instead the company is focusing on developing the technologies and systems that underpin the vehicle.
The company said to local media on Monday, according to the FT: “Samsung Electronics plans to develop algorithms, sensors and computer modules that will make a self-driving car that is reliable even in the worst weather conditions.”
The newspaper reported that since last year, South Korea has issued 19 permits to test self-driving vehicles.
The nation’s biggest car-maker, Hyundai Motor, received the first permit.
