The countdown is very much on to the launch of one of the biggest games of 2016, and indeed one that could shift the gaming landscape like nothing before it.

August 9 is the day No Man’s Sky finally launches – more than two years after it was first announced at E3 in Los Angeles by British indie studio Hello Games. Since then, the space exploration game has been the centre of much gaming chatter for one reason – the unique algorithm that powers it.

In short, No Man’s Sky is powered by a procedural algorithm that can constantly create new worlds, meaning the game’s universe could in theory be infinite, much like the actual universe.

The latest preview video of the game shows off a tiny yet potentially thrilling aspect of it – the outer space dogfights that players can have.

It’s the second in a series of four that are previewing different themes in the run-up to the launch. The first was all about exploring.

And yes, you did read that figure right – 18 quintillion planets.
