Technology has re-defined and re-designed many of the products around our home in recent years, however the tape measure has remained the same for around 100 years.

That is until this new Kickstarter campaign appeared from a firm called Bagel Labs.

Yes, the smart tape measure is now a concept. Called the Bagel, it comes complete with three modes of use and a digital display to show your measurements. There’s also Bluetooth connectivity and a microphone for recording your notes and then sending measurement details to a connected app on your smartphone.

The most traditional of the three modes is called String, and uses a piece of string to measure lengths of up to three metres. The string is linked to the digital display and can be laid out straight or wound around objects.

There’s also Wheel mode, which uses a click-wheel built into the Bagel that means running it along any surface will measure that surface, no matter how oddly shaped it is. It also means you can do one-handed measuring.

There’s also a laser-pointer and ultra-sound for measuring distances beyond your reach that are within 5 metres.

A Kickstarter campaign of the Bagel has just been launched, though it has already soared past its funding goal, so should meet its expected shipping date of November.
