Photo and video app Snapchat has surpassed Twitter in its number of daily active users, according to reports in the US.
There have been claims in the last day that Snapchat, which was launched in September 2011, has gone past the 150 million mark for users who visit the service on a daily basis.
In comparison, Twitter has around 140 million daily active users. Neither company has commented on the claims.
Twitter has around 310 million monthly active users according to its most recent financial results, but the service has struggled to keep up with other social media sites in recent years.
At one point the site was the second largest social network after Facebook, but has since been overtaken in user numbers by Facebook’s own Messenger app, Instagram and WhatsApp – as well as Snapchat in daily terms, it appears.
Snapchat has expanded from a time-sensitive image and video app into a creative one complete with regularly changing filters as well as a news and pop culture section complete with content from major news sources.
Earlier this week while speaking at a conference, Twitter CEO and founder Jack Dorsey admitted the service was both confusing and alienating sometimes, something that he was working to fix. Dorsey has made similar comments in the past, saying that Twitter needed to be better at showing how it worked and why it was useful. The service has had success with its Periscope live broadcasting app, though Facebook Live has now emerged as a strong competitor to it as well.
Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel rejected a $3 billion purchase offer from Facebook in 2013.
