Sony has just revealed a trio of new Xperia smartphones – all with a redesigned camera, and a phablet with a 4K screen.
The Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact can boast of a 23 megapixel camera that has been rebuilt from the ground up especially for the new generation of phones – even using tech from their full-size, professional photographer aimed DSLR cameras.
Sony says zoom is five times better, that shaky videos are a thing of the past, and that these are just two of the improvements made.
But the Premium is perhaps the biggest eye-catcher, not least because of its mirrored back. The Premium also comes in gold – as do all the big flagship devices these days. But arguably one of the most interesting features is that 4K screen.
Not only does this enable users to watch video in Ultra HD, it also contains software that enables users to upscale content that’s in HD, to 4K.
Impressive stuff, and Sony claims that thanks to a reconfiguration of the battery, the Premium’s battery can last up to two days. It’ll be interesting to see if that is actually the case once the device is out in the wild.
As for processor, all three have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor housed within their frames.
Interestingly, the Xperia line is all set to launch with Android Lollipop, not Marshmallow, which is due out some time in the autumn. Of course, that could be a smokescreen to stop people narrowing down Marshmallow’s launch date, but for now the wait for a Marshmallow device goes on.
As well as the Premium coming gold, the Compact comes in yellow and pink alongside the tradition black and white versions.
The Premium – no doubt an attempted iPhone challenger given its size (it has the same size screen at 5.5 inches) – arrives in November, with the standard Z5 and the Z5 Compact due in October.
