Spotify has announced the acquisition of two new companies – one that works in music discovery, the other that focusses on voice messaging.
Soundwave, a social music app that serves as a platform for discovering new music, feels like a pretty natural fit for the music streaming service – as it works at continuing to bring new music to users.
Cord Project, on the other hand, is a more mysterious proposition. The firm is best known for an app called Cord, which is a voice messaging app that enables users to send short audio clips to others.
Very little has been said by Spotify on how either of the companies will fit into the Spotify ecosystem, or how their technology will be applied. But given that Cord Project was founded by two former Google employees, the move could be just as much about recruiting talent as it is new technologies and products.
Spotify’s vice president of product Shiva Rajaraman said: “Spotify is laser focused on delivering innovative and engaging music discovery experiences to delight our millions of users.
“The acquisitions of both Cord Project and Soundwave give us the opportunity to bring two extremely talented and like-minded teams into the Spotify family. We’re excited to welcome them on board, and are looking forward to their contributions in shaping the future of music engagement.”
