Super Mario Run had the biggest launch ever on the App Store

Super Mario Run is officially one of the biggest app releases of all time after the Nintendo game racked up almost two million downloads in the UK in its first weekend.

According to app data company App Annie, the game was downloaded 1.9 million times in the UK and more than 37 million times globally.

The game is the first official Super Mario title to launch on mobile and the first three levels can be played for free.

According to The Verge and another app data specialist, Apptopia, the release was the biggest the App Store has ever seen, thanks to first day downloads of 2.85 million, even beating Pokemon Go, which was released in July.

However, Pokemon Go only officially launched in three countries on its first day, compared with 150 for Super Mario Run.

Despite the rush, lukewarm reviews of the game sent Nintendo shares tumbling as the company is to place more emphasis on mobile in 2017. The Switch console, a home console/mobile hybrid device, is due to launch next year.

The company is also under fire from some who don’t agree with the £7.99 in-app purchase needed to unlock the full game.
