Camp fires or gas burners might be the traditional way of cooking when you’re exploring the great outdoors, but both can be fiddly and not that easy to use.
A very 21st century option is now on the way, as one firm has taken the idea of the microwave and made it mobile. The Wayv Adventurer is a thermos flask-sized container that’s battery powered and uses radio frequencies to heat and cook food – just like a microwave.
The Adventurer started life as a crowd-funding project on Crowdcube, but after raising the money needed to get off the ground – £150,000 – it can now be pre-ordered ahead of an expected release in 2017.
Power comes from quick-charging li-ion batteries that are compatible with in-car as well as solar chargers, or being plugged in at home. A full charge is said to give around 30 minutes of cooking time.
It can hold between 100ml and 500ml of food or liquid, and while the initial aim was to develop it for military personnel and adventurers, Wayv has seen plenty of interest and enthusiasm from hikers and those simply out fishing, as well as in workplaces where there might not be a microwave or you need a quick desk-side lunch.
It could also be used in areas where a naked flame is banned.
There’s a simple range of controls on the lid of the Adventurer – a start/stop button, timer settings, backlight switch and a digital display to show you how much cooking time is left.
There’s yet to be a UK price confirmed for the Adventurer, but the product’s website is listing a $199 (£138) price for the US ahead of the release.
