When you logged on to Twitter today did you notice something different but couldn’t quite put your finger on what?

Well the answer is your background image has gone.

The social media site is removing all custom background images as part of a plan to make the site easier to understand, with custom images now only showing up on certain pages – for example, those that show a single tweet.

Users can still have a background, but only one of the pre-approved Twitter ones that you can see in the Settings menu, under Design.

To make Twitter clearer, the site has moved to make pages less busy, with the eye drawn to the tweets and other information on screen, rather than the artsy image sat behind them.

However, the move hasn’t gone down too well with users of the service.

The revolution has already started however, with a Chrome plug-in already surfacing on Github from a coder in Germany called The Twitter Background Restorer.
