While the all-singing, all dancing Windows 10 has been grabbing the headlines and the plaudits recently, there’s still a number of us using earlier incarnations of the Microsoft operating system.
But the glitch with using Windows 7 is that the updates seem to come through thick and fast – generating a message which reads: “Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update X of XX.”
Now Microsoft has decided to combine all its historic updates into what’s called a “convenience rollup” which people can download.
If you’ve been updating the system since it was released then your computer will be bang up-to-date anyway.
This just gives people an optional manual way to update – and a way to avoid those notifications which seem to always appear at the worst possible time.
Windows 7 users don’t have to download the convenience rollup, it’s very much an optional extra.
“This convenience rollup package contains all the security and non-security fixes released since the release of Windows 7 SP1 that are suitable for general distribution, up through April 2016,” Microsoft explained.
Before the manual updates can be started, however, Windows 7 needs to be updated with the April 2015 servicing stack.
Microsoft is also moving to monthly rollups of all non-security updates, rather than the current piecemeal offering.
The tech firm explained: “We are making this change – shifting to rollup updates, to improve the reliability and quality of our updates.”
Security updates will still be provided as and when issues are identified.
