Virgin Media has revealed its new TV box, which can support ultra-high definition and record up to six TV programmes at once.
The new V6 TV box will become available in the new year, and will support 4K ultra-high definition broadcasting, enabling users to watch content from apps such as Netflix and YouTube in the high-resolution format from launch.
The V6 box will also come with one terabyte of storage, Virgin said, enough space for 500 hours of programming to be saved.
Virgin TV is looking to challenge Sky, which launched its own next-generation box, Sky Q, earlier this year.
David Bouchier, Virgin Media’s chief digital entertainment officer, said the new box was a “game-changer”.
“Our new Virgin TV line-up raises the bar in home entertainment, marrying the latest and smartest technology with the very best TV programmes, all underpinned by our ultrafast cable network.
“This is game-changing TV.”
Virgin also announced a new 14-inch tablet designed to be used as a mobile viewing device over WiFi around the home.
Called the TellyTablet, the device will cost £299 and includes built-in access to a user’s Virgin TV recordings and on-demand shows.
“For too long viewing TV on wireless devices has been secondary to other uses,” Mr Bouchier said.
“With the Virgin TV TellyTablet no matter where you are in the home you can watch your favourite TV wirelessly in the quality it deserves – be that Kingdom in the kitchen or Bake Off in the bedroom.”
The telecoms giant also revealed a new Virgin Media Store from which users will be able to buy and download TV shows and films to keep, as well as be sent physical DVDs.
Virgin said the standard price for the new V6 box, which will be made available in January, will be £99.95.
