WhatsApp now boasts a billion users, but that doesn’t mean it’s slowing down as it looks to constantly keep adding new features to draw in new users.
The latest update to the app though is not necessarily one that will light a spark of excitement in those who don’t yet use the app and are looking for a reason to.
“When placing a WhatsApp call, you now quickly leave a voice message if your call isn’t answered, just like voicemail,” reads the info on the update.
Yes, that’s right, WhatsApp now supports voicemail.
It is a feature the app was missing, but in the age of chat bots in Facebook Messenger and face-swapping filters on Snapchat this feels a little like a half-step from WhatsApp.
Voicemail has been around since the 1980s, but along with phone calls they have dropped in recent years as messaging services and social media began to take hold.
However, services such as WhatsApp have had to embrace the more traditional communication services in order to fully establish themselves – WhatsApp was originally just a messaging service, before adding the ability to make voice calls in 2015.
