Windows 10 Maps update lets you access traffic cameras

The latest preview build of Windows 10 includes an update to the Maps app that enables users to check traffic on their commute by accessing traffic cameras.

According to the Microsoft blog, the update gives users the ability to check the traffic along their route to home or work – no matter where you are – just by tapping the Traffic icon.

Not only that, users can check the traffic conditions even more thoroughly by glancing at their most recently viewed traffic cameras at the same time.

Access to cameras was added at the end of 2015, working with more than 35,000 of them across 11 countries.

The feature has been added to latest beta version of the software that has been pushed out to Windows Insider Program members, the preview scheme that enables keen Windows users to get early access and try out potential new features for Windows 10. Microsoft uses the program as a proving ground before releasing updates to the general public.

Elsewhere in Maps, the app will now follows your system preferences when it comes to light and dark modes. Which means no more blinding screens when attempting to navigate at night.

While the features – with the exception of cameras – are already in place in the likes of Google Maps, Windows 10 users will no doubt be pleased to have new features to get to grips with.
