Withings scales have been the ultimate high-tech motivator for those wanting to lose weight and get fit.

Which is why it’s no surprise that the French company has rolled the dice and decided to release a fourth-generation version of its popular connected scales line-up.

Called the Body Cardio, the weighing device works alongside the updated Health Mate app and, more importantly, will be able to track your heart health as well as your weight and overall fitness.

The sleek-looking scale is just 0.7 inches think with glass and aluminium accents and measures roughly 13 inches square. Costing a whopping £139.95, you probably want your scales to tell you more than just how much you weigh – and that’s where where Body Cardio wants to impress.

This next-gen scale aims to help improve your overall health by keeping track of not only your weight, but also a host of other things like BMI, fat and muscle mass, bone mass, percentage of water in the body, heart rate and Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV).

But what exactly is PWV? While it sounds like yet another metric we need to get our heads around, it is actually a well-proven measurement that measures how long it takes for your heart to pump blood to the vessels in your feet. It can help determine if you have stiff arteries or are at risk of high blood pressure.

While it is by no means a substitute for a GP, Body Cardio could help provide early indicators about possible blood pressure issues, so you can adjust your lifestyle accordingly.

However, PWV doesn’t get displayed on the screen of the Body Cardio so you need to use Withings’s Health Mate app to keep track of your heart health.

But the good thing is, you don’t have to worry about keeping the device near a power source – the Body Cardio has a long-life battery that will last for around 12 months on a single charge. The scales can then be recharged using a micro-USB cable that is included in the price.

The Health Mate app also comes with other benefits. For example, you can take a quick pulse reading using your phone’s camera or track your food consumption.

And if you set a goal to lose weight, the app will coach you with tips and encouragement to help you reach your objective.

Withings Body Cardio is available in white and black and costs £139.95.
