If you were going to build a robot, it makes perfect sense to model it on the person you know the best: yourself. That’s exactly what Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro has done, and the result is a startlingly lifelike “twin”.
His android, called Geminoid, is equipped with artificial intelligence that Ishiguro plans to put at the service of humans.
Ishiguro holds an opinion that wouldn’t be out of place in a sci-fi movie – that a new generation of robots will one day become companions for people.
He says on his website: “The end of the information age will coincide with the beginning of the robot age,” with information technology and robotics fusing together.
While we seem pretty far off the robotic age at the moment, his android certainly feels like a look into the future.
