We’re already four weeks into 2026 (when did that happen?) and already it’s turning out to be an eventful year.
From a fight outside a St Peter Port Pub to the sale of a high-profile restaurant chain, here are five of Express’ most-read recent stories…
1. Town fights
Police are investigating a brawl outside a pub near St Peter Port harbour.
Officers have asked for witnesses and anyone with phone footage to come forward.
2. Judge supports “open justice”
A Royal Court judge ruled in favour of “open justice” this week, by rejecting a request for reporting restrictions on a criminal case involving a young person.
3. I’ll have the Red, please
Guernsey hospitality group Randalls has bought a chain of St Peter Port restaurants.
The chain – Big Red Group – includes seafront steakhouse Red, pizza restaurant Rosso and Spanish-themed wine bar Tinto.
4. No GST on GPs
Deputies are discussing how GST would work if they vote for it later in the year.
They’re deciding between a 5% tax including food or a 6% one without it, but have ruled out GST on rents, mortgages and doctors’ visits.
5. One becomes two?
The owners of the former Auberge restaurant want to turn one property into two.
The site, in Jerbourg, would become two dwellings if planning permission is approved.
And ICYMI…
When a Guernsey tour guide bought a World War Two photo album off eBay he got more than he bargained for.
The photos, taken by a German sailor stationed here in the Occupation, led Tim Osborne to uncover his fascinating life – turning it into a short documentary.
